Who was Octavius Catto?

The Catto League honors its namesake – Philadelphia baseball legend, progressive educator, and civil rights leader Octavius V. Catto – by using recreational baseball programming as a tool for building community across the city. To learn more about Catto and his legacy, watch the short video above or read Matt Rothenberg's National Baseball Hall of Fame article, Fighting for Equality on the Baseball Grounds

You can visit the Octavius Catto memorial statue, A Quest for Parity, on the southwest corner of City Hall and find a sign recognizing where his team, the Pythians, played in baseball's first racially-integrated game at 27th and Master Streets in North Philly.
